What makes specialized breast imaging better than a general medical practice?

At a general practice, the same radiologist interpreting your mammogram may also read scans from other parts of the body. At Fairfax Radiology, our dedicated team of breast imaging experts focuses exclusively on breast health, enabling earlier detection of breast cancer and more accurate readings.

How does Fairfax Radiology compare to other imaging centers or general practices?

Fairfax Radiology is the first practice in the D.C. area to be recognized as an American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. Our breast cancer detection rates exceed national and regional averages, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care.

FAQ icon

How common is it to need follow-up imaging after a mammogram?

According to the American College of Radiology, about 10% of women who have a screening mammogram will be called back for further imaging. Of those, most will find nothing wrong. However, five out of every 1,000 women screened will be diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s essential to choose a specialized provider that can handle all aspects of your breast health.

Who Is Reading My Scan and Why Does It Matter?

The interpretation of your imaging studies is a crucial aspect of your care. At Fairfax Radiology, your breast scans are read by radiologists who specialize exclusively in Breast Imaging. This level of expertise matters because our radiologists are trained to identify subtle abnormalities that a general radiologist might overlook. They utilize their specialized knowledge to ensure accurate diagnoses, which can lead to early detection of breast cancer when it is most treatable.

FAQ icon

What is Dense Breast Tissue?

Breast density can affect the accuracy of mammograms, which is why it’s essential for patients to understand their breast density and its implications. At Fairfax Radiology (FRC), your results will indicate if you have dense breast tissue. FRC provides additional imaging options, such as breast ultrasound or MRI, to ensure comprehensive evaluations are made when needed.

Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia, a condition that affects men and boys, is characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue. This often leads to self-consciousness and discomfort.

FRC is a fantastic organization and place to have your radiological and diagnostic needs taken care of. The staff are very professional, courteous and knowledgeable. I especially like the ability to get the reports on-line. I have used the Woodburn and Arlington Boulevard  facilities. They are great. The new check-in process at Woodburn is an excellent idea eliminating the lines in front of the check-in windows. Keep up the great work – nice having you here!!!!!
