National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In the United States alone, over 15,000 children are diagnosed every year with cancer. The many forms of childhood cancer comprise the number one cause of death by disease for youth in America. Thankfully modern research and technology continue to increase long term survival.

Imaging plays a vital role in documenting the presence of disease, monitoring the effectiveness of treatment, and evaluating for potential relapse. Pediatric Oncologists work with our dedicated Pediatric Radiologists to use the most appropriate combination of x-rays, ultrasound, CT, MRI and nuclear imaging including PET/CT for each presentation of the disease.

Our Radiologists are committed to improving cancer care by not only working directly with patients and families, but also contributing to teaching and education. In addition, they participate in weekly case reviews and monthly multidisciplinary tumor boards at Inova Children’s Hospital.
