Low-Dose MRI Contrast Is Available at Fairfax Radiology Centers

Patients today are increasingly informed about MRI contrast and often ask about options that reduce gadolinium exposure while maintaining the high image quality their physicians rely on for accurate diagnosis.

According to reporting by Radiology Business, a large majority of patients surveyed said they would prefer a lower-dose MRI contrast agent, and many indicated they would consider switching providers or traveling farther to access one.

Fairfax Radiology Centers offers Vueway™, a macrocyclic gadolinium-based contrast agent administered at 0.05 mmol/kg. By comparison, many standard macrocyclic gadolinium-based contrast agents are administered at 0.1 mmol/kg. This dosing approach allows for reduced gadolinium exposure while maintaining diagnostic image quality.

Vueway is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in adult and pediatric patients 2 years of age and older to detect and visualize lesions with abnormal vascularity in the central nervous system and the body.

At Fairfax Radiology, contrast selection is individualized based on the specific exam, clinical indication and patient factors. Our subspecialty-trained radiologists determine the most appropriate contrast agent including Vueway or other routinely used gadolinium-based contrast agents to ensure optimal diagnostic accuracy and patient safety.

Low-dose contrast agents are designed to provide the diagnostic information physicians need while reducing overall gadolinium exposure. As with all gadolinium-based contrast agents, potential risks and side effects exist. Patients with questions about MRI contrast or an upcoming exam should speak with their referring provider or imaging team.

“Vueway represents an important advancement in gadolinium-based contrast,” said Heather Finizio, senior clinical director at Fairfax Radiology Centers. “It allows us to thoughtfully manage contrast dosing while continuing to deliver the high-quality imaging our referring physicians and patients expect.”
