What is a Parathyroid SPECT/CT?

A Parathyroid SPECT/CT is a nuclear medicine test used to locate overactive parathyroid glands.

Why would my doctor recommend a Parathyroid SPECT/CT?

This scan is typically used to diagnose hyperparathyroidism. It can detect parathyroid adenomas, ectopic parathyroid glands and parathyroid hyperplasia.

What can I expect during a Parathyroid SPECT/CT?

Upon arrival, a technologist will inject a small amount of radiotracer into your vein. Initial imaging will be performed using a special camera called a gamma camera. After this first set of images, the technologist will give you a return time for delayed imaging, which may be two to four hours later. Each set of images may take between 30 and 50 minutes.
