What is a Calcium Score?

A Calcium Score is a type of noninvasive screening test that uses Computed Tomography (CT Scan) to help determine if you are at increased risk for a heart attack—even if you have no symptoms of coronary disease.

The results of this test will allow your physician to calculate your risk of developing Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) based on the amount of calcified plaque measured in your coronary arteries. Like all CT scans at Fairfax Radiology, this test is fast and accurate. It is noninvasive and uses the lowest amount of radiation possible.

What should I expect during a Calcium Score screening?

During the exam, you will lie on the padded scanner table. Electrodes (small, sticky discs) will be placed on your chest and are connected to a machine (electrocardiograph or ECG) that will read your heart's electrical activity during the exam. You will be asked to hold very still and hold your breath as the table moves through the CT scanner, capturing images. You may hear a humming sound from inside the machine. The Technologist will be in the adjacent room operating the scanner, but will be able to hear and communicate with you throughout the exam. The entire test takes just a few minutes.
