What is Body CT?

What is a Body CT?

CT, also called CAT scan or Computed Tomography, is a type of diagnostic test that uses sophisticated X-ray equipment to help detect a variety of diseases and conditions. CT of the body is specifically focused on the chest, abdomen and/or pelvis. While the test is fast, relatively painless and noninvasive, its results provide much greater detail than traditional X-rays, especially of the soft tissues and blood vessels in these areas of the body.

Why would my physician recommend a Body CT?

Your physician may recommend a Body CT scan if you have been suffering from any number of symptoms, including pain, cough, fever, injury or weight loss. It is one of the best tools for evaluating and detecting different cancers.

What can be diagnosed using a Body CT?

Using specialized equipment and expertise to create and interpret CT scans of the body, our Radiologists can more easily diagnose problems related to the chest, intestine and internal organs, such as pneumonia, appendicitis, inflammatory bowel disease, tumors and more.

What should I expect during a Body CT?

If this is your first CT, you may not be sure what to expect. Not to worry, we are here to guide you every step of the way. This test is relatively quick and painless. During a CT of the chest, abdomen or pelvis, you will lie on the padded scanner table. A contrast agent may be given to you orally and/or intravenously for the exam. you will be asked to hold very still and to hold your breath as the table moves through the CT scanner, capturing images. You may hear a humming sound from inside the machine. The Technologist will be in the adjacent room operating the scanner, but will be able to hear and communicate with you throughout the exam. The entire exam takes just a few minutes.

How is a CT scan different from an X-ray?

Like Traditional X-rays, a CT scan produces multiple images of the inside of your body. However, unlike Traditional X-rays, the images generated during a CT scan are cross-sectional and can be reformatted in multiple planes and turned into a three-dimensional image. CT images typically provide greater detail than Traditional X-rays, particularly of the internal organs, soft tissues and blood vessels.
