Ultrasound at Fairfax Radiology

Whether it is used to get an early glimpse of your unborn baby, help evaluate the cause of muscle or joint pain, or provide image guidance for needle biopsies, Ultrasound is a very common and simple procedure. It uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of the tissues inside your body. Ultrasound does not use radiation and there are no known harmful effects.

Ultrasound is used in a variety of screening and diagnostic examinations, providing structural and functional information of processes within the body. Doppler capabilities allow us to determine the flow of blood through vessels.

During an Ultrasound, a warm, clear gel is placed over the area to be tested and a probe (transducer) is gently moved back and forth over the skin.  Sound waves are used to create an image on the screen. Our subspecialized radiologists are then able to interpret these images.

When the imaging is complete, the clear gel will be wiped off your skin. It will not stain or discolor your clothing. Once the exam in complete, you may resume your normal activity level.
