Thyroid Uptake and Scan
What is Thyroid Uptake and Scan?
What is a Thyroid Uptake and Scan?
A Thyroid Uptake and Scan is a nuclear medicine test that evaluates the structure and function of the thyroid gland.
Why would my doctor recommend a Thyroid Uptake and Scan?
This scan is typically used to diagnose thyroid conditions such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroid nodules, or goiter.
What can I expect during a Thyroid Uptake and Scan?
This exam consists of several parts performed over two consecutive days. On day one, you will be asked to swallow a pill containing a small amount of radioactive iodine. Please ensure that you have had nothing to eat or drink (except water) for six hours prior to your appointment, and that you have followed the dietary and medication restrictions provided at the time of scheduling.
On day two, the technologist will measure the amount of iodine absorbed by your thyroid and will take images using a specialized device called a gamma camera. This portion of the exam typically takes 15 to 30 minutes.
What can I expect after a Thyroid Uptake and Scan?
On day one, you will need to continue fasting for two hours after swallowing the radioactive iodine pill and remain on a low-iodine diet until imaging is complete on day two. Hydration is encouraged after receiving any type of nuclear medicine. Once imaging is complete, your provider may advise you to resume medications as normal.
Our team of board-certified nuclear medicine physicians will review your results and ensure they are available in a timely manner through our patient portal.
