Women’s Health – Make Routine Screenings Part of Your Healthy Habits

As women, we put a lot of energy into taking care of ourselves and our loved ones to ensure a healthy lifestyle. Women that maintain a good healthcare routine not only help themselves, but can influence others to manage their own health better. Part of a good healthcare program includes regular wellness checks with your primary care provider and routine screening exams.

Screening tests are key to disease prevention and early detection. Early detection of disease may allow for better treatment options and improve health outcome. For example, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer is 98% when disease is detected early. Bone density exams can diagnose weak bones or osteoporosis before a break even happens. Screening exams of all types may detect disease before there are physical signs or symptoms.

Guidelines exist for different screening exams, often based on age, family history or existing health conditions. The Society of Breast Imaging and American College of Radiology recommend that all women start annual breast cancer screenings with mammograms at the age of 40, and earlier if there is a family history. The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends that women, starting at the age of 65, begin bone density screenings. Cardiac screening is an important tool for women who are diagnosed with a heart condition or have risk factors for coronary artery disease. Screenings such as CT Calcium Score or Coronary CTA are used to evaluate plaque and narrowing in the arteries of the heart.

Taking extra care to include screenings in your health regimen does not take much effort. With state-of-the-art technology, multiple locations, evening and weekend hours, screenings at Fairfax Radiology have never been easier, faster or safer. Make screenings part of the healthy habits you choose.
