Low Dose CT Lung Screening Could Save Your Life

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Often, early lung cancer does not cause symptoms and can go undiagnosed. Undergoing screening may help detect the cancer at an earlier stage, when it is easier to treat.

How Does Low Dose CT lung screening work?

Fortunately, it is a simple, quick and non-invasive test. A low dose CT lung screening uses sophisticated X-ray equipment and up to 90 percent less ionizing radiation than a conventional CT scan to identify lung cancer and nodules that would not be visible on a regular chest X-ray.

Who is eligible for Low Dose CT lung screening?

Recent federal guidelines recommend people at a higher risk of developing lung cancer receive annual screening. Yearly lung cancer screening is now covered by several major insurance companies as well as Medicare for patients who meet ALL the following criteria.

  • Individuals between 55 and 77 years old

  • Current smokers or prior smokers who have quit within the past 15 years

  • Those who have smoked at least a pack of cigarettes a day for 30+ years

  • Individuals are asymptomatic (without chest symptoms or signs of lung cancer)

  • Have a written order from a qualified health professional that attests to a face-to-face shared decision-making visit

If you qualify for lung cancer screening, contact your physician for an evaluation.

Screening is not a substitute for smoking cessation; quitting remains the most effective way to reduce death related to lung cancer. In addition to discussing a screening CT, you should take this opportunity to talk about smoking cessation with your healthcare provider.
