Image Guided Breast Procedures at Fairfax Radiology

Since the early detection of Breast Cancer can save lives, we offer breast imaging services, such as Image Guided Breast Imaging procedures, at multiple locations throughout Northern Virginia with convenient morning, evening, and weekend hours. Take a closer look at the different breast biopsy procedures we offer to you.

Image Guided Biopsies

An Image-Guided Biopsy will help your doctor determine whether a lump or abnormality found through a mammogram or other imaging study is benign or cancerous. The procedure is done to get a sample of breast tissue without surgery. A highly trained, breast specialized FRC Radiologist performs the biopsy. It is painless for most women, although you may feel some pressure and slight discomfort.

The biopsy is guided through three different techniques:

  • Ultrasound

  • Stereotactic (Mammography)

  • MRI

Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy

During an Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy, a radiologist identifies the abnormal area in the breast with Ultrasound. The skin is cleaned and then local anesthesia is applied to numb the skin and underlying tissue. Then, a sample of breast tissue will be removed under direct Ultrasound visualization for testing to determine if the cells are benign or cancerous.

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

During a Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, a radiologist uses digital 2D or 3D X-ray imaging to identify the abnormal area in the breast. The skin is cleaned and then local anesthesia is applied to numb the skin and underlying tissue. A specialized vacuum-assisted biopsy device is then used to remove samples of the abnormal, targeted tissue for testing to determine if the cells are benign or cancerous.
