FAIRFAX, Va., August 2026 — Fairfax Radiology Centers (FRC) is pleased to welcome Hubert Edward Smith, M.D., to its Interventional Radiology team. Dr. Smith brings extensive training and research experience in interventional radiology, with a particular interest in image-guided, minimally invasive approaches to patient care.
Dr. Smith completed his medical training at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where his interest in interventional radiology developed early in his medical education. He served as president of the Vascular and Interventional Radiology Interest Group, organizing educational programs and creating opportunities for medical students to learn from physicians and residents in the specialty.
He continued his training at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he has pursued advanced training in Interventional Radiology since 2020. His clinical education has been complemented by a significant body of research in interventional and cardiovascular imaging.
Dr. Smith’s research has included investigations into interventional radiology procedures and patient outcomes, including the use of prophylactic antibiotics prior to port placement and early initiation of feeding following percutaneous gastrostomy. His work has also included cardiovascular imaging research focused on coronary CT angiography and contrast media protocols. He has presented his research at national and international conferences, including the Society of Interventional Radiology Annual Scientific Conference and the European Congress of Radiology.
In 2024, Dr. Smith co-authored a study published in The Arab Journal of Interventional Radiology examining prophylactic antibiotic use prior to port placement and its effect on insertion-related infection rates. He has also contributed to publications in the American Journal of Roentgenology and Radiologic Technology.
“Interventional radiology provides an opportunity to combine advanced imaging with minimally invasive treatment,” said Dr. Smith. “I look forward to bringing this approach to Fairfax Radiology and providing patients with thoughtful, individualized care.”
Dr. Smith earned his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina and his Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, summa cum laude, from Clemson University, where he was a member of the Calhoun Honors College.
Throughout his medical training, Dr. Smith has maintained a strong commitment to service. He volunteered at free medical clinics serving uninsured and underserved patients in the Charleston area and participated in the Heart Health Program at MUSC Children’s Hospital, where he led exercise classes for children and adolescents with cardiovascular risk factors.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Smith has a wide range of interests. He enjoys exercise, music, travel, running as well as basketball and college football.
His international experiences include clinical and medical training opportunities in Argentina, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, where he gained exposure to different healthcare systems and approaches to patient care.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Smith to Fairfax Radiology,” said Worth Saunders, CEO of Fairfax Radiological Consultants, PLLC. “His depth of training, commitment to research and dedication to patient care will be a valuable addition to our Interventional Radiology team.”
Dr. Smith is a member of the Society of Interventional Radiology and the American College of Radiology.
