What is Microphlebectomy?

What Is Microphlebectomy?

If you have varicose veins, you know how painful and embarrassing they can be. While generally not a health threat, varicose veins may lead to health complications, including the inability to pump a sufficient amount of blood back to the heart. Varicose veins can also indicate deeper vein problems, including thrombosis and blockages. Microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used when varicose veins are so close to the skin that it is the easier to access them directly using tiny incisions for excellent results.

How does Microphlebectomy work?

Microphlebectomy is performed under local anesthesia. In this procedure, the Interventional Radiologist makes tiny nicks in the skin, and then removes the varicose vein in sections with a tiny hook-like instrument.

What should I expect during Microphlebectomy?

During your initial appointment, our staff will provide you with pre-procedure instructions. It is very important that you follow these instructions and take any prescribed medication. Before the procedure, the area will be prepped and you will receive a local anesthetic. The Interventional Radiologist will make tiny incisions in the skin where the varicose veins are visible. The varicose vein will then be removed in sections with a tiny hook-like instrument. The small nicks do not need sutures, and instead are closed with tape. The treated leg is then wrapped in a thin dressing and a compression stocking.
