What is an Obstetric (OB) Ultrasound?

An Obstetric (OB) Ultrasound is a routine test used to evaluate a pregnancy and determine fetal development and delivery due dates. It uses high-frequency sound waves, rather than radiation, to safely visualize an embryo or fetus. At Fairfax Radiology, our Ultrasound Radiologists recognize the importance of an immediate response, accommodating the needs of the anxious parents and the referring physician’s concerns and imaging requests.

Why would my physician recommend an OB Ultrasound?

Your physician may recommend an OB Ultrasound for any number of reasons. It can be used to confirm where a pregnancy is located and confirm the age in the early stages of a pregnancy. OB Ultrasounds are also the preferred method for determining the position, size, age and development or your unborn baby.

What should I expect during an OB Ultrasound?

If this is your first Ultrasound, you may not be sure what to expect. Not to worry, we are here to guide you every step of the way. During an OB Ultrasound, warm gel is placed over the area to be tested and a probe is gently passed back and forth on your skin over the area to create and pick up sound waves, which are converted into an image on a screen.

What should I expect after an OB Ultrasound?

When the imaging is complete, the clear gel will be wiped off of your skin. If any is left on the skin, it will dry like a powder and will not stain or discolor your clothing. Once the exam is complete, you may resume your normal activity level.
