What is Breast Ultrasound?
A Breast Ultrasound is a procedure that uses sound waves to create an image of the tissues inside your breast. Used in conjunction with a Mammogram, a Breast Ultrasound identifies the composition of a lump in the breast to determine whether it is a cyst (fluid filled) or a solid mass. Mammography alone cannot differentiate between a cystic mass and a solid mass. That is why physicians often recommend a Breast Ultrasound as a follow-up to a Mammogram when a mass is discovered.
Why would my physician recommend a Breast Ultrasound?
If a lump is found during a self-examination, physical or Mammogram, a Breast Ultrasound will help determine whether the lump is a cyst (filled with fluid) or solid. If there is a finding on the Mammogram that needs further investigation, the Radiologist will request an Ultrasound. Breast Ultrasound is also the preferred imaging procedure if you are under 30, breastfeeding or pregnant, due to the increased density of breast tissue and radiation exposure.
What should I expect during a Breast Ultrasound?
If this is your first Ultrasound, you may not be sure what to expect. Not to worry, we are here to guide you every step of the way. During a Breast Ultrasound, warm gel is placed over the area to be tested and a probe is gently passed back and forth on your skin over the area to pick up sound waves, which are converted into an image on a screen.

For your convenience, appointments are available mornings, afternoons and weekends at the locations listed above. Learn more about each location.
Can I bring my children to my imaging appointment?
All imaging procedures require that only the patient remain in the room during the exam. Because the patient requires our full attention, we cannot provide supervision for any accompanying children. If you wish to bring your children, you must arrange for another adult to supervise your children during your procedure. Families of Obstetrical patients will be allowed in the room for a limited period of time, but only when an adult accompanies the minor children.
