What is an Abdominal (Hernia) Ultrasound?

Many times your physician can diagnose a hernia during a physical exam and no other tests are needed to make the diagnosis. Other times, there may be symptoms of a hernia, but no obvious protrusion is detected during a routine exam. In this case, a targeted or limited Abdominal Ultrasound may be ordered. This Abdominal Ultrasound is a simple, noninvasive test that uses sound waves to create real-time images of the location of your pain and/or the locations most commonly associated with hernia.

Why would my physician recommend an Abdominal (Hernia) Ultrasound?

Your physician may recommend an Abdominal (Hernia) Ultrasound if you have pain or other symptoms associated with a hernia, but no hernia or mass is palpable. It may also be used to gauge any changes in an existing hernia.

What should I expect during an Abdominal (Hernia) Ultrasound?

If this is your first Ultrasound, you may not be sure what to expect. Not to worry, we are here to guide you every step of the way. During an Abdominal Ultrasound, warm gel is placed over the area to be tested and a probe is gently passed back and forth on your skin over the area to create and pick up sound waves, which are converted into an image on a screen.

What should I expect after an Abdominal (Hernia) Ultrasound?

When the imaging is complete, the clear gel will be wiped off of your skin. If any is left on the skin, it will dry like a powder and will not stain or discolor your clothing. Once the exam is complete, you may resume your normal activity level.
