What is interventional radiology?

Interventional radiology is a specialized field of medicine that utilizes imaging and minimally invasive devices to diagnose and treat medical conditions. Unlike traditional open surgeries, these image guided procedures often result in less pain, less recovery time, and a quicker return to normal activities.

Interventional radiology is used to treat many conditions and the list is ever-expanding.
Procedures include but are not limited to:

  • Unblock arteries with balloons or stents
  • Plug up abnormal arteries to tumors
  • Dissolve blood clots in veins and arteries
  • Take biopsies without incisions
  • Treat tumors in the liver, kidney, and other areas
  • Drain blocked organs such as the kidney or liver
  • Place tubes or catheters for chemotherapy or dialysis
  • Joint injections

Interventional radiology has had a great impact on patient care in many areas of medicine. Not only is the range of conditions that can be treated impressive but interventional radiology has many other advantages and can be more effective than other traditional treatment techniques.
