HeartscanHow a 3D HeartScan Works

At Fairfax Radiological Centers, we use a new state-of-the-art 64-slice CT scanner to generate hundreds of high-resolution images of your heart. Our doctors can actually view the blood flow through your heart while it pumps, and so can you. This technology would have been unheard of just a few years ago. After your 3D HeartScan your physician will receive a comprehensive report interpreted by one of our board certified physicians. This will include images with amazing three-dimensional detail of your heart and arteries. Any abnormalities or areas of plaque build-up will be clearly identified.

About the Procedure

Heartscan A 3D Heart Scan is a simple procedure. Prior to the exam you'll be asked to follow a liquid diet for 2-3 hours and avoid caffeinated foods or beverages. A simple blood test for kidney function will be performed immediately before the exam at no extra cost. This is done to make sure it is safe to give you the contrast dye. Depending on your heart rate on the day of the exam, you may also be given a medication to keep your heart rate low. This makes the 3D images clearer. Once the scan begins, you'll lie on your back on the scanner table, hold your breath sevwral times for about 20-30 seconds, and then the test is complete. Throughout the entire procedure, our professional technicians will ensure your comfort and answer all your questions.

Is it Safe?

3D HeartScanning is FDA approved and utilizes thin x-ray beams to create the images. The test is safe, easy, and performed in less than 15 minutes. You'll be comfortable during the procedure, and every effort will be made to insure that there are no side effects from the contrast dye or medications.
