Vein Centers Services / Conditions

Patients If you’ve been living with varicose veins for fear the treatment is too complicated, painful and risky, the news couldn’t be better.

What happens during the Diagnostic Consultation?

At the Vein Centers of Fairfax Radiological Consultants, our physicians will first pinpoint the underlying cause of your vein problem. This is done with a clinical history, physical examination, and often a specialized ultrasound study. Once the cause of your problem is identified, an individual treatment plan is formulated and discussed with you.

Our center is staffed by experienced interventional radiologists, physicians who integrate medical expertise with imaging-based diagnosis and minimally invasive therapy.

What is VenaCure™ Laser Treatment?

VenaCure™ Laser Treatment is the primary technique used at our Vein Centers for treatment of varicose veins. It is an innovative, minimally invasive outpatient procedure that provides patients an effective alternative to stripping of the greater saphenous vein.

PatientsDuring the procedure, a small catheter is inserted through the skin into the damaged vein. A laser fiber is then inserted into the vein. The doctor numbs the vein and then turns on the laser. Its targeted energy heats and seals the vein shut. This procedure is performed using a local anesthetic. The patient is immediately able to resume normal activities and complications are uncommon.

What is Micro Phlebectomy?

Micro Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive technique performed under local anesthesia. Using this technique, varicose veins are easily removed through tiny nicks in the skin. Micro Phlebectomy is often used in combination with laser treatment or sclerotherapy.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy (injections) can be used to treat both varicose and spider veins.

The procedure is simple. A tiny needle injects the veins with a medication that irritates the lining of the vein. Over a short time, in response to the irritation, the vein closes and is reabsorbed. The blood from the closed vein is routed to properly working veins, restoring correct circulation. Sclerotherapy relieves symptoms due to varicose and spider veins in most patients. With this procedure, veins can be dealt with at an early stage, helping to prevent further complication and unsightliness.

You may need several sclerotherapy sessions for some vein regions and the number of injections varies per session. Normal activities can be resumed after sclerotherapy. This procedure usually causes only minimal discomfort. Bruising and pigmentation may occur after sclerotherapy. If bruising occurs it usually disappears within 1-2 weeks. Although pigmentation almost always fades, it can last for several months. Scarring and other complications are rare.

Sclerotherapy is often used in combination with other treatments. Our doctors sometimes use ultrasound to guide sclerotherapy treatment to an abnormal vein below the skin.
