Vascular Screening Studies

Medicare now pays for a one-time ultrasound screening for AAA for beneficiaries who are at risk and who have not previously had AAA US exam paid under the Medicare program. (CPT code G0389)

Eligible patients fit in at least one of the following risk categories:
- Have a family history of abdominal aortic aneurysm
- Are a man age 65 to 75 who has smoked at least 100 cigarettes in his lifetime
- Manifests other risk factors recommended for screening by the US Preventive Services Task Force regarding AAA

Eligible beneficiaries must receive a referral for the screening as a result of their initial preventive physical examination (IPPE) also referred to as the “Welcome to Medicare” physical exam.

There is no Part B deductible. The coinsurance/copayment applies. Many, but not all, commercial insurers also cover this exam for men 65+.
