Breast Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography) Is Now Available at Fairfax Radiology

Screening remains the most effective method of detecting breast cancer in its early most-treatable stages. 2D digital mammography is the gold standard in breast cancer screening, however, there are times when overlapping tissue in the 2D image can either obscure or even mimic suspicious findings resulting in delayed treatment or callbacks for additional exams.

A New Tool In The Fight Against Breast Cancer

Breast tomosynthesis is a 3D mammogram that acquires multiple images of the breast at different angles during a single sweep of the x-ray arm. High-powered computing is used to convert the breast images into a stack of very thin layers or “slices”—building what is essentially a “3-dimensional mammogram.” Instead of viewing all the complexities of breast tissue in a flat image, our radiologists can examine the tissue a layer at a time. Fine details are more clearly visible, no longer obscured or misrepresented by superimposed structures. The additional information provided by breast tomosynthesis results in:

Due to the newness of this technology, many health insurance companies do not cover this exam. To help offset the cost of offering this exciting new technology, while we will bill insurance for the mammography exam, we will ask patients to pay a nominal fee for Tomosynthesis at the time of service.
