Dr. James P. Earls, Director of Cardiovascular CT and Body and Cardiovascular MRI at FRC reviewed CT scans from over 4,000 consecutive CT examinations in 2009. Approximately 20% of these patients had a prior CT scan performed on an older generation scanner. The results of this study were presented at the Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America in November 2009.

Following is a before and after comparison of average dose for typical CT scans:

Exam Prior CT (mSv) New CT (mSv) Mean % change **

Abdomen and Pelvis CT 19.8 7.8 -61%
CT Urogram 26.2 11.8 -55%
Chest CT 6.3 2.5 -60%
Spine CT 16.0 6.3 -66%
Cardiovascular CT 6.3 3.3 -47%

* measurements are in millisieverts (mSv)

** results may vary due to patient size and scanning protocol

the latest low-dose scanning technology benefits all patients, but is particularly advantageous to children who are highly sensetive to radiation, as well as pateints who require CT scans to monitor a disease or condition.

FRC will provide any needed consultation regarding CT scanning and radiation dose. For more information, call 1-888-4-LOW-DOSE (1-888-456-9367) to speak directly to a knowledgeable, professional technologist who can answer questions and address any concerns relative to CT scanning.
